The National Heritage Institute’s workplaces

The National Heritage Institute is headed by the Director-General, who manages and appoints her deputies, the Directors of the Regional Offices and the Directors of the Regional Historic Sites Managements. In addition to the management of the National Heritage Institute, the Directorate General includes the departments directly managed by the Director General, the Monument Conservation Section, the Operational and Economic Section and the Section for the Management of Monuments in the Care of the National Heritage Institute.

Directorate General

Its administrative staff coordinates the activities of the entire institution, while the professional staff (monuments managers) are responsible for the care of national cultural monuments and methodically guide colleagues from the territorial departments.

Regional Offices

The Regional Offices deal with the recognition, documentation, professional care and protection of monuments, their collections and conservation areas (i.e. reserves and zones). They provide free of charge advice for the preservation, maintenance and restoration of monuments and provide expert supervision during restoration, reconstruction, etc. They also present and bring cultural heritage to the public in various forms. Regional Historic Sites Management

These are responsible for the practical management of castles, chateaux and other monuments owned by the state and cared for by the National Heritage Institute. The four territorial monument administrations with their headquarters in Prague, České Budějovice, Sychrov and Kroměříž are responsible for more than a hundred monuments in all 14 regions of the Czech Republic. (Their websites is operated only in Czech.)

Monuments under the management of the National Heritage Institute

Mostly castles and chateaux, but also monasteries, churches, farmsteads, villa or technical monument owned by the state are entrusted to the care of the National Heritage Institute. Of the more than a hundred sites, the vast majority are open to the public and are visited by around five million visitors a year.
